Facts about Exotic Monkeys
There are many species of exotic monkeys found in different locations around the world. This article gives a few basic facts about the most popular monkeys.
The Spider monkey is a new world monkey species that lives in Southern and Central America. They are usually darker in color and have very long arms and tails. They grow to be about 2 feet tall and weigh about 28 pounds. Spider monkeys are one of only a small amount of monkeys who have completely prehensile tails. It takes 6-7 years for this type of monkey to reach sexual maturity. Every 2 years a spider monkey female will usually give birth to one offspring after a 5 ½ month gestation period. Their lifespan is about 40 years.
Capuchins are some of the most well recognized of the exotic monkeys because they are often used in the media. They are the type of monkey used as organ grinder monkeys. Capuchins are new world monkeys that live in South and Central America. The four species of capuchins include the Black Cap, the Cinnamon, the Weeper and the White-Throated capuchins. These monkeys all have semi-prehensile tails and grow to be about 18 inches tall and weigh 6-10 pounds. Capuchins reach sexual maturity at 6 years of age and have a 5 ½ month gestation period. They live to be 40 years old.
Vervet Guenons live in South and Eastern Africa. These old world monkeys have a dark back, a white front and a black face. Females are usually smaller than males, so their height can be anywhere between 16 and 22 inches. They weigh 10-15 pounds when adults. Vervet Guenons reach sexual maturity after 4 years and females will produce 1 baby after a 5 ½ month gestation period. The average life span for a Vervet Guenon is about 40 years.
Macaques represent a wide variety of monkey types. These monkeys can be large or small and may have long tails or tiny stub tails. These old world monkeys are found in Asia and some parts of Africa. There are several species of macaques including the Rhesus, Pigtail, Snow, Java, Celebes, Lion tail and Stump tail species. They reach sexual maturity after 3 or 4 years and give birth to single baby after a gestation of 5 ½ months. Macaques can weigh between 6 and 10 pounds and live up to 40 years.
Squirrel monkeys are tiny monkeys from Central and South America. These new world monkeys only reach a height of a foot and can weigh only 1 or 2 pounds. They take about 1 ½ years to reach sexual maturity and then give birth to a single baby after 5 ½ months of gestation. Squirrel monkeys live to be about 20 years old.
A Bush Baby is a small monkey with very large ears and eyes. These monkeys live in sub-Saharan Africa. They are swift and agile monkeys that are nocturnally active. Bush babies can be up to a foot long and have bushy tails that make up most of their length. They can have 1-2 offspring at a time after a short 3-4 month gestation period.
The Mangabey monkey is an old world monkey found in tropical rain forests of Western and Central Africa. These types of monkeys, which can contain several species, all have long limbs with slender bodies. The can be 16-34 inches long and weigh up to 24 pounds. Their tails are often longer than their entire bodies.
The smallest types of exotic monkeys include Marmosets and Tamarins. Marmosets are tiny, very primitive monkeys that reach a length of only 8 inches. Tamarins reach lengths of 9-12 inches and weigh only ½ of a pound. The main difference between Marmosets and Tamarins is that Tamarin lower teeth are longer than their incisors, while the lower teeth of Marmosets are not.
